The residents of the Town of Greece have for many years attached great
importance to the quality of life in this community. As a result, Greece has
developed many assets that serve to enhance the quality of life for its residents


Location
:
Greece is a northwest suburb of Rochester in New York. It is bounded on the north by Lake Ontario.

Culture
Greece offers many cultural opportunities for both performers and audiences, The Greece Performing Arts Society sponsors the Greece Symphony Orchestra, the Greece Choral Society, groups include the Greece Paint Players theater group and the Suburban Rochester Arts Group, which sponsors an annual art show in August. Greece high schools also contribute to the cultural offerings with a variety of excellent concerts, plays and musicals. The Greece Historical Society maintains the history of the town and operates a museum in the former Gorden Howe home on the site of Greece's Northampton Town Center on Long Pond Road just north of Latta Road. With downtown Rochester only 15 minutes away, Greece residents also have ready access to the many cultural attractions available there.

Town Government
Greece is know throughout New York State
for its progressive town government.The town provides a wide range of municipal services needed in a large, urban community. Its planning department was the first such professionally staffed department in a Monroe County town and has guided the town's evolution from a rural, agricultural community to a large urban community. Approximately 40% of the town is made up of undeveloped rural area.
The town is governed by a town board composed of a supervisor who is elected at-large and 1 council person for each of the 4 wards. The supervisor is the chief executive and fiscal officer of the town. The town municipal offices are located at One Vince Tofany Blvd.

Transportation
The Town is conveniently located near several major routes including NY Route 390, Seaway Trail Route 18, and the Lake Ontario State Parkway, providing easy access to and from the Town to the New York State Thruway system and all points North, South, East and West. The Greater Rochester International Airport is located just 4 miles south of the Town on NY 390 and Amtrak trains operate from the Rochester terminal which is just 15 minutes by auto via NY 390 to NY 490. Rochester Regional Transit Services operates a number of convenient bus services that connect to downtown Rochester.

Library
The main branch of the Greece public Library is located at 2 Vince Tofany Blvd. The Barnard Crossing branch is also available. These include 140,000 print and non-print items for loan, story hours for preschoolers, book review sessions, musical programs, films, puppet and magic shows for children, and a copying service.

Industry
Several corporations are located in the Town or within minutes from the Town's borders. These include: Eastman Kodak Company, Gannett, IBM, Bausch & Lomb and Xerox Corporation as well as medium size corporations.

Schools
The 21 schools of the Greece Central School
District serve most of the town, currently providing educational services to more than 14,100 students.
As the largest suburban school district in Monroe County and the seventh largest in New York State, Greece Central has been a leader in education since the 1960's. The district is governed by a Board of Education, elected by the community. The board selects a superintendent of schools to implement
policy and administer district operation.The district
has been recognized for its achievements nationally, and for a commitment to reform.Its adult and
continuing education program is one of the largest
and most comprehensive programs in the state. In addition to Greece Central Schools there is also
Hilton, Spencerport Central School Districts and
five private/parochial schools that serve the town.

Recreation
The Greece Human Services Department provides a wide variety of programs for the community. Taking advantage of the Towns numerous parks, playgrounds and other recreational facilities, the Human Services Department provides program services for:

Youth and Family Counseling
Social Development Educational Programs

Housing
Greece's housing stock has been increasing at a rapid rate since the end of World War II. The average annual growth in recent years has been in excess of 500 units. As a result of normal turn-over rates, there are always a sizable number and variety of single family homes, townhouses, apartments and condominiums that are available. The Town is fortunate in that it does not have any pockets of substandard housing. Older residential developments are well maintained and, in fact, they tend to experience continuing upgrading.


Shopping/Restaurants
Greece has extensive retail shopping facilities and restaurants. With 1.7 million square feet, The Mall at Greece Ridge Center (pictured at right), features 6 department stores and 200 specialty shops. This combined with many restaurants and additional shopping centers which include Wal-Mart, K Mart and other major stores make Greece a primary destination.

Health Care
Unity (Park Ridge) Health System provides a comprehensive range of health care services at sites through out the town of Greece.The 154-acre Park Ridge Health Care Campus on Long Pond Road is home to Park Ridge Hospital and its Emergency Department, chemical dependency center and mental health center. Services for older adults include the 120-bed Park Ridge Nursing Home, day health and home care programs and independent living complexes, including the village at Park Ridge. A child care center and a physicians office building are also on campus. The 250-acre Parkway Campus on Island Cottage Road is the site of a 122-bed nursing home and adult day health program an apartment complexes for low-income adults and a medial office building.

Public Safety
Local Police protection is provided by the Greece Police Department.The department provides a complete range of police services. Fire protection provided by the Barnard, Greece Ridge, Lake Shore, North Greece and Hilton Fire Districts. They are manned by a combination of paid and volunteer staff. Volunteer ambulance service is provided by the Barnard Fire District and by the Greece Volunteer Ambulance Service.
